mRNA Cancer Vaccine Shows Promise Against Deadly Skin Cancer

Moderna and Merck announced strong results this week for an mRNA vaccine designed to fight melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. In a large late-stage trial, patients who received the vaccine along with standard treatment were much less likely to see their cancer come back within several years. Doctors say the results mark a major moment for cancer care, calling them some of the most promising data seen in years for advanced skin cancer patients. The vaccine works very differently from the ones used against COVID-19. Instead of preventing infection, it trains the immune system to find and attack cancer cells already growing in the body. Scientists first take a small sample of a patient's tumor and study its genetic code to find unique markers, called neoantigens, that appear only on that patient's cancer cells. Using this information, they design a custom mRNA vaccine that teaches the immune system to recognize and destroy those specific cells while leaving healthy tissue alone. Because every tumor is different, each vaccine is made individually for one patient, a process that can take several weeks.

Experts say this personalized approach could open the door to a new generation of cancer vaccines beyond melanoma. Researchers are already testing similar mRNA vaccines for lung cancer, kidney cancer, and several other tumor types, hoping to repeat the early success seen with skin cancer patients.
