Europe's Major Rivers Hit Record Lows as Drought Tightens Its Grip

The Rhine, Danube, and Po are all running dangerously low, threatening shipping, energy supplies, and food production across the continent.

Europe is facing a severe water crisis as some of its most vital rivers drop to historic lows. The Rhine, which originates in the Swiss Alps and flows into the North Sea, fell to record low levels last week at monitoring stations in Cologne, Germany, and Lobith, the Netherlands โ€” the lowest readings since records began.

Germany's Low Water Information System (NIWIS) reported that 44% of Rhine monitoring stations and 78% of those along the Danube registered record low water levels at the end of July. Renewed heatwave conditions are expected to push temperatures above 40ยฐC across central and southern Europe for at least another week.

The shallow waters are seriously disrupting inland shipping and trade. At Kaub, a critical chokepoint near Koblenz in western Germany, the navigable depth dropped to just 25 centimetres โ€” matching the 2018 record low. Shipping official Martin Wolters warned that cargo vessels would need to spread loads across more ships, raising transport costs and creating supply bottlenecks.

The Danube, which flows through 10 countries, has also fallen to its lowest levels in 30 years in Serbia and Romania. Hungary's only nuclear power plant is now operating at reduced capacity, and officials are closely monitoring whether it may need to be taken entirely offline.

Experts say the crisis underscores the growing threat of climate-driven drought across Europe. As heatwaves become more intense and frequent, governments face increasing pressure to invest in water management infrastructure and prepare for the long-term consequences of a drying continent.
