The British-Nepali climber, who scaled all 14 eight-thousanders in 189 days, was killed along with nine others on Broad Peak in the Karakoram range.
Renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, 43, died on Thursday when an avalanche struck his expedition on Broad Peak in Pakistan's Karakoram mountain range. His company, Elite Expeditions, confirmed the news with "profound sadness and immense heartbreak." A total of ten climbers lost their lives in the disaster.
Purja, also known as "Nimsdai," became a household name in the mountaineering world after completing a remarkable feat in 2019: he summited all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in just 189 days, shattering the previous world record by more than seven years. Born in Nepal, Purja served in the British military for 16 years, including a decade in the special forces. At the time of his death, he was attempting to become the first person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders twice — without supplemental oxygen.
