Wildfires Force More Than 330,000 to Flee in France and Spain

Massive wildfires swept through southwestern France and central Spain this weekend, forcing more than 330,000 people to evacuate. Fires near Bordeaux, in the Gironde region renowned for its vineyards, destroyed over 150 houses in the coastal town of Le Porge. Authorities called it one of France's worst forest fires since World War Two.

French firefighters struggled to contain a blaze that burned roughly 42,000 hectares in the southwest — part of 98,000 hectares consumed across the country since January. Captain Nicolas Braz, who led the operation, warned that the fire had generated its own whirlwinds, making it "erratic and unmanageable." In total, more than 220,000 people were evacuated from the southwestern region.

In Spain, over 90,000 people fled communities near Madrid and Ávila, where some 77,000 hectares burned. Officials declared the Ávila fire the largest in the country's recent history. A new blaze also erupted near Valencia late Saturday, with regional authorities admitting it had surpassed their capacity to extinguish.

Communities responded with remarkable solidarity. In Le Porge, residents organized a volunteer network to cook meals and provide rest spaces for exhausted firefighters. "Many of them have never experienced a fire of this magnitude before," said volunteer Nathalie Augonnet, who described the destruction as "devastating" for her town of 3,500.

The crisis has intensified debate about climate change across Europe. Scientists link longer dry seasons and record temperatures to more frequent, harder-to-control wildfires. Governments now face growing pressure to invest in stronger fire prevention and early warning systems before summer conditions worsen further.
