Scientists Discover First Atmosphere on an Earth-Like Planet Outside Our Solar System

Exoplanet LHS 1140b, orbiting a red star 48 light-years away, is now the strongest candidate yet for a world that could support life.

Astronomers have made a landmark discovery: for the first time, researchers have detected an atmosphere surrounding a rocky, Earth-like planet located within the habitable zone of a distant star. The planet, known as LHS 1140b, orbits a red dwarf star approximately 48 light-years from Earth.

The lead researcher, Dr. Collin Cherubim of Harvard University, called the finding "a big deal." His team identified helium gas in the planet's upper atmosphere using advanced spectroscopic observations. Although helium alone cannot sustain life, scientists believe other gases may exist deeper in the atmosphere.

Dr. David Charbonneau, also from Harvard, emphasized the broader significance of the discovery. "People are generally interested in the big questions: Are we alone? This study reveals the first atmosphere discovered on a rocky planet in the habitable zone of a star outside our solar system," he said. The findings were published in the journal Science.

More than 6,000 worlds have been identified orbiting distant stars to date, but none had previously been confirmed to possess an atmosphere. This discovery brings scientists one critical step closer to answering whether life could exist beyond Earth. The research team noted that LHS 1140b's position within the habitable zone means liquid water could theoretically exist on its surface.

The result strengthens ongoing efforts to find biosignatures β€” chemical signs of life β€” on exoplanets. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope continues to analyze similar candidates, including the seven rocky worlds of the TRAPPIST-1 system. Researchers describe LHS 1140b as currently the most promising target in the search for life beyond our solar system.
