A court in Genoa delivered verdicts on Thursday for 57 defendants in one of Italy's worst peacetime disasters.
On July 16, 2026, an Italian court finally delivered its verdict in the Genoa Morandi bridge disaster trial. The collapse occurred in August 2018, when a major motorway viaduct crumbled during a rainstorm, sending cars and lorries plunging to the ground far below. Forty-three people lost their lives in the tragedy, which shocked the entire country.
Giovanni Castellucci, former chief executive of Autostrade per l'Italia — the company responsible for maintaining the bridge — was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Prosecutors had sought a far longer term, but Judge Paolo Lepri handed down what many victims' families described as an acceptable first step toward justice. Another top official, Michele Donferri Mitelli, received an 11-year sentence.
In total, 57 defendants stood trial over more than 280 court hearings spanning nearly four years. The charges included manslaughter and negligent failure to maintain the aging structure, which was designed by engineer Riccardo Morandi in 1967. Thirty-two were found guilty, while 25 were either acquitted or saw their charges expire under the statute of limitations.
Prosecutors argued that warning signs had been repeatedly ignored and that repairs were deliberately delayed. Defense lawyers, however, attributed the collapse to a structural design flaw rather than to negligence in maintenance. The viaduct was considered one of the most complex bridges in Europe due to its unique cable-and-concrete construction.
For the victims' families, the verdict was an emotional but incomplete victory. Egle Possetti, who lost her sister and her entire family in the disaster, called the outcome "a ray of light." Castellucci, who was already serving a separate six-year sentence for a 2013 road incident, was not present in court when the verdicts were read aloud.
