WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo a Global Health Emergency

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a public health emergency of international concern over an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The outbreak is centered in the eastern Ituri province and has recorded approximately 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths so far.

The current strain is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a type of Ebola for which no approved drugs or vaccines currently exist. This makes the outbreak particularly difficult to contain. Early symptoms include fever, muscle pain, and fatigue, later progressing to vomiting, diarrhea, and internal bleeding.

The virus has already spread beyond DR Congo's borders. Two confirmed cases have been reported in neighboring Uganda, including a 59-year-old Congolese man who died on Thursday. Additionally, one case has been confirmed in Kinshasa, the country's capital, linked to a patient who traveled from Ituri province.

The WHO cited several factors escalating the risk of wider spread, including ongoing armed conflict, a humanitarian crisis, high population mobility, and a large number of informal healthcare facilities in the affected region. A confirmed case was also reported in Goma, a city currently under M23 rebel control.

Global health officials are urging immediate coordinated action to prevent further transmission. While WHO stressed the outbreak does not yet qualify as a pandemic emergency, the international community is being called to provide rapid financial and logistical support to contain the disease before it spreads further.
