Hantavirus Scare on Cruise Ship Sends Passengers to Quarantine

The last passengers from the MV Hondius, a polar expedition cruise ship, disembarked in Tenerife, Spain, on May 11, 2026, as a hantavirus outbreak prompted urgent health responses worldwide. Three additional passengers tested positive for the rare but potentially fatal virus shortly after the vessel docked.

Hantavirus is a serious illness most commonly transmitted when humans inhale dust contaminated with infected rodent droppings. The disease can cause severe respiratory failure, and some strains carry a fatality rate of over 35 percent.

Sixteen American passengers are now being monitored at a national quarantine facility in Nebraska — the only such specialized unit in the United States. Two others are under medical observation in Atlanta, Georgia, while a French national who returned home has also tested positive.

Authorities suspect the outbreak may have originated in Ushuaia, Argentina — a popular tourist destination near the southern tip of South America, often called the "end of the world." Local officials in Ushuaia have denied that the city is the source, but Argentine health teams are actively investigating.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that the overall public risk remains "very low," since hantavirus does not spread easily between people. The incident has nonetheless raised serious concerns about health screening procedures on cruise ships operating in remote regions.
