Global Cyber Attack Disrupts Canvas, Leaving Students Worldwide Without Access

A large-scale international cyber attack struck Canvas, a leading academic software platform, in early May 2026, causing widespread disruption to schools and universities in dozens of countries. Canvas, developed by Instructure, is used by millions of students and teachers for assignment submission, grading, and communication.

The hacking group reportedly exploited a vulnerability in Canvas's authentication system, gaining unauthorized access to user data. Instructure confirmed the breach on May 9 and stated that the company had immediately launched an investigation with cybersecurity specialists.

Educational institutions across the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and several European countries reported that students were unable to log in, submit coursework, or access lecture materials. For many students in the middle of final exams or project deadlines, the outage caused serious academic disruption.

Cybersecurity experts warned that breaches targeting educational platforms have increased sharply in recent years, partly because universities tend to store large amounts of sensitive personal data while operating with comparatively limited security budgets. The incident renewed calls for stronger regulation of data protection in the education sector.

Instructure pledged to restore full access within days and promised to notify all affected users about the extent of the data exposure. The attack has sparked fresh debate about how well-prepared schools and universities are for sophisticated cyber threats in an increasingly digital world.
