Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Alarms Europe as WHO Calls for Calm

A cruise ship struck by a dangerous viral outbreak at sea docked at the Spanish island of Tenerife on Sunday, May 10, 2026. The MV Hondius, a Dutch polar expedition vessel, arrived at the port of Granadilla after three passengers died from hantavirus during a voyage from South America. The ship carried hundreds of tourists who had explored remote destinations including Antarctica.

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus moved quickly to calm public fears, firmly declaring that "this is not another Covid." He confirmed that no symptomatic passengers remained on board at the time of arrival, and that six total infections had been officially documented among those who sailed.

Health authorities believe that passengers contracted the Andes strain of hantavirus while visiting South America prior to the voyage. Unlike most variants of the virus, the Andes strain is capable of spreading from person to person, raising serious alarm. Hantaviruses are otherwise transmitted mainly through contact with infected rodents or their droppings.

Spanish officials implemented thorough containment protocols at the port, screening every individual for fever, extreme fatigue, and shortness of breath before allowing them to leave. Authorities reassured local residents that the risk of community spread was very low. Health workers in full protective gear supervised the disembarkation process beginning at 07:00 GMT.

The incident reignited global concerns about infectious disease management aboard cruise ships. Experts noted that hantavirus does not spread as easily as airborne viruses such as the coronavirus, limiting the risk of a wider outbreak. Officials stressed that swift response, transparent communication, and robust public health systems remain the most effective tools when facing an emerging health threat.
